Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Dennis Jetta

We celebrate an extraordinary individual whose unwavering commitment and tireless efforts have left an enduring mark on the Noongar community. It is with great honor that we present the 2024 SW NAIDOC Lifetime Achievement Award to Mr. Dennis Jetta.

Contribution and Commitment

Dennis Jetta, an 82-year-old Noongar man, has been a pillar of strength and compassion in our community for over four decades. His story is one of resilience, selflessness, and boundless dedication.

Arriving in Bunbury in 1983, Dennis dedicated his life to serving others. As a hardworking man, he raised six children, instilling in them the values of compassion, respect, and community. Despite facing personal loss—the passing of his beloved wife of 62 years earlier this year—Dennis continues to go above and beyond for his family and our community.

Dennis's commitment to Noongar people knows no bounds. Whether it’s the middle of the night or miles away, Dennis is always ready to lend a helping hand. Many Noongar families can attest to his generosity, as he remains a steadfast source of support to this day. He has conducted numerous funerals for the community, drawing upon his Christian faith to provide solace and guidance during difficult times.

In 2023, Dennis received the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in the King’s Honours list at Government House in Perth. This recognition was a testament to his tireless work and unwavering dedication to the Noongar community. He was also a finalist for the National NAIDOC Awards held in Brisbane the same year.

Impact and Legacy

Dennis’s impact extends far beyond accolades. He has worked tirelessly to break down barriers faced by Aboriginal people in local government and NGO departments. His advocacy and practical solutions have paved the way for progress, ensuring that everyone is treated with respect and equality.

Three notable examples illustrate Dennis’s profound influence:

  1. Employment and Training: During his tenure as an employment officer, Dennis provided countless Noongar individuals—both young and old—with opportunities for employment and training. Many of those who started as apprentices or trainees under his guidance now hold leadership positions within our community.

  2. Spiritual and Emotional Support: Dennis’s Christian beliefs have been a beacon of hope for many. He has supported families through grief, conducting heartfelt funerals and offering solace during their darkest hours. His availability for home visits, day or night, demonstrates his unwavering commitment to those in need.

  3. Noongar Prisoners: Dennis’s ongoing work with Noongar prisoners reflects his compassion and dedication. He builds relationships with those facing tough times behind bars, providing much-needed support and encouragement.

As the Chairperson of the local Aboriginal Elders Group in Bunbury, Dennis collaborates with organizations seeking cultural advice and wisdom from Elders. His leadership is revered by all, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.

A Legacy of Service

Dennis Jetta embodies resilience, strength, and leadership. His journey inspires us all to overcome adversity, lift others up, and create positive change. As we celebrate his achievements today, let us remember that Dennis’s story is not just about accolades; it’s about lifting hearts and spirits.
