2024 SW NAIDOC Sportsperson of the Year

Rebecca Jetta

We honor an exceptional individual whose unwavering commitment, fervor, and guidance have made an enduring impact in her chosen sport: football. It is my privilege to present the 2024 SW NAIDOC Sportsperson of the Year award to none other than Rebecca “Becky” Jetta.

Rebecca’s journey began at the South Bunbury Football Club in 2017, where she embarked on a remarkable playing career. Over the years, she has graced the oval in 70 career games, scoring 8 goals and earning 22 best player votes. Her exceptional skills have also seen her play WAFL games for East Perth.

But Rebecca’s impact extends far beyond statistics. She was an integral part of South Bunbury’s successful Finals campaigns, securing two premiership medals in the 2020 and 2021 seasons. Her adaptability allowed her to excel in various positions, earning her a spot in the prestigious 2023 Nutrien Ag Solutions Country Football Team. Rebecca’s commitment during the preseason at Eaton Football Club culminated in a Premiership Medal, a proud moment shared with her five older brothers, all of whom had previously graced the Country Football Championship.

In 2023, Rebecca’s leadership journey took a new turn as she joined the Eaton Football Club Women’s Leadership team. Her 50 games for the club exemplify her unwavering dedication to the game. However, it is her off-field contributions that truly set her apart.

Rebecca’s passion for AFL has ignited a fire in the hearts of Indigenous and non-Indigenous women across the South West. Her knowledge of the game played a pivotal role in the Eaton Boomers Women’s Team’s success during the 2023 season, as they clinched victory after victory. She has become a trailblazer, inspiring generations of Indigenous girls and women to take up footy and chase their dreams.

Yet, it is Rebecca’s leadership that truly shines. She leads by example, providing invaluable feedback and encouragement to her peers, coaches, and teammates. Whether it’s preseason training, game days, or club events, Rebecca’s presence uplifts those around her. As a core midfielder, she orchestrates game day tactics and unites her teammates through mutual respect and a shared love for the game.

Ladies and gentlemen, Rebecca Jetta embodies the spirit of sportsmanship, resilience, and community. Her legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. Please join me in congratulating Rebecca on this well-deserved honor as the 2024 SW NAIDOC Sportsperson of the Year!
